The Director of Consumer Affairs is responsible for enforcement of the European Communities (General Product Safety) Regulations, 2004 (S.I No 199 of 2004), which transposes European Council Directive 2001/95/EC of 3 December 2001 on General Product Safety (GPSD). These Regulations impose a requirement on businesses to place only safe products on the market. There is also a requirement on any business conducting a product recall on safety grounds, to notify National Authorities. Under the provisions of the GPSD, the Member State Authority is, in turn, required to notify the European Commission of the reasons for and extent of the recall. This is a Rapid Alert Notification system entitled RAPEX. The Director of Consumer Affairs is the designated Authority for RAPEX in the Republic of Ireland (rapex is an internet based system for the rapid exchange of information between the Member States and the European Commission on measures and actions in relation to consumer products posing a serious risk to the health and safety of consumers)

Lifejacket recall
Recall of Mullion Lifejacket COMPACT 150N ISO 12402.
Mullion manufacturer of Lifejacket COMPACT 150N ISO 12402 has contacted the MCA to advise that a problem may occur during the inflation of the above mentioned lifejacket.
The MCA was informed that in order to avoid any potential safety issue, Mullion is recalling COMPACT 150N ISO 12402 lifejackets if they have a yellow valve in the oral tube
Read Mullion Technical Safety Alert.
The affected lifejackets are being recalled as a precaution for inspection and, where appropriate, repair or replacement.
Owners of lifejackets as described above should:
• Not to use them
• Return them to the nearest Mullion Lifejacket Service Station or to Sioen Ireland factory in Donegal to have the oral tube valve checked for stability or lifejacket replacement if necessary.
