International Lifeguard Appreciation Day takes place on Friday July 31st 2026
This day is marked to recognise the commitment, professionalism, and courage of the lifeguards who work tirelessly to keep Ireland’s lifeguarded waterways safe.

A message from Clare McGrath, Chair, Water Safety Ireland
International Lifeguard Appreciation Day is an opportunity to recognise the remarkable people who dedicate themselves to protecting others around water.
Whether on a beach during the summer or on duty at a swimming pool throughout the year, lifeguards help people enjoy the water safely. They provide reassurance, prevent incidents before they happen and respond with professionalism whenever they are needed.
Last summer alone, lifeguards trained and assessed by Water Safety Ireland rescued more than 300 people at risk of drowning at open water environments, carried out over 6,000 first aid treatments, and reunited 245 lost children with their families. Those figures remind us that while we all hope never to need a lifeguard’s assistance, it is reassuring to know they are there if we do.
Today, I want to thank Ireland’s local authorities, who employ beach and inland waterway lifeguards each bathing season, and the local authorities, leisure centres and aquatic facilities across the country that employ qualified pool lifeguards year-round. Their continued investment in professional lifeguard services plays a vital role in helping people enjoy water safely.
I also want to pay tribute to the dedicated Water Safety Ireland members who train and assess both pool and beach lifeguards to the highest International standards set out by International Life Saving Europe (ILSE). Their commitment ensures that Ireland continues to have highly skilled lifeguards ready to serve wherever they are needed.
To every lifeguard on duty, whether watching over swimmers at a beach, lake or river this summer, or safeguarding families in swimming pools every day of the year, thank you. Your vigilance, professionalism and commitment make a real difference every single day.
On behalf of Water Safety Ireland, Happy International Lifeguard Appreciation Day, and thank you for all that you do.

This day is marked to recognised the commitment, professionalism, and courage of the lifeguards who work tirelessly to keep Ireland’s lifeguarded waterways safe.
Throughout the summer, lifeguards are stationed at designated rivers, lakes, and beaches across the country, providing expert advice, monitoring conditions, responding to incidents, and helping to prevent emergencies before they happen.
Their job goes far beyond water rescues. From assessing weather and water conditions to providing first aid and reassuring the public, lifeguards help create safer environments for everyone enjoying the water.
